An overview of G-Cloud

The G-Cloud is a key initiative of the UK Government, under the direction of the Chief Information Officer Delivery Board, as part of the Government ICT Strategy to reduce computing costs by encouraging competition and to enable the delivery of agile services.

The G-Cloud opens up government IT projects and procurement frameworks to SME suppliers and encourages the use of Software as a Service (SaaS) applications into government departments, local authorities and the wider public sector.

The G-Cloud provides a transparent and open procurement model and also provides for accreditation of the services (IaaS, PaaS and SaaS) in accordance with ILx standards for security and business impact.

Frances Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office: ”We are reforming the way the public sector uses ICT so that it is cheaper, more transparent, more innovative and flexible – with more opportunities for SMEs to enter the marketplace”.
